2003 - 2004 Winners
JPMorgan Chase, a leading global financial services firm, is being honored for its ON_DEC program. The program began five years ago with the idea of providing one inner city school and its students access to technology they could otherwise not afford. The first corporate-school partnership is with Ditmas IS 62 in Brooklyn, a large, urban middle school where 96 percent of the students are eligible for free lunch.
More than 2,000 employees of JPMorgan Chase have donated their time to install the computers, act as mentors for students, and develop leadership-training programs. JPMorgan Chase has invested over $5 million, which has resulted in tremendous dividends. This program included installing computers into the homes of students with one caveat: they have to graduate to keep the computers in their homes. In addition, teachers and staff were provided with computer equipment. The success has been demonstrable: attendance has risen while discipline problems have fallen; communication has been enhanced between teachers, parents, and students; and the rate of requests to transfer schools has dropped from 27.6 to 18.1 percent. Due to the success of the initial ON_DEC initiative, JPMorgan Chase has begun implementation of the program with two more schools.
JPMorgan Chase is a leading global financial services firm with assets of $1.1 trillion and operations in more than 50 countries. KeySpan Corporation, the largest gas distribution company in the Northeast, is being recognized for its "Cinderella" program. Like the fairy godmother transforming Cinderella, KeySpan Corporation has provided over a million dollars to renovate thousands of housing units and storefronts throughout Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and now Long Island. Since its creation more than three decades ago, Cinderella has provided over a million dollars to rehabilitate hundreds of commercial and residential buildings; create more than ten thousand units of affordable housing; spur the creation of small businesses; anchor efforts to revitalize neighborhoods; and promote energy-efficiency and the environment.
In 2003, the program added "Green Cinderella," which provides grants to raise "green" awareness and incorporate responsible environmental practices into renovations. The first of these grants turned a run down ice house into a six unit residential building using environmentally friendly technology. Through these combined efforts, KeySpan continues to maintain its long-standing commitment to the communities it serves.
KeySpan Corporation (NYSE: KSE) is a member of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, and the fifth largest distributor of natural gas in the United States. KeySpan is also the largest electric generator in New York State. http://www.keyspanenergy.com/
